What is organic milk?

Products are organic from BUTTERFLY

The business of producing Butterfly Organic milk products was established in 2011 by Mrs. Air (Asaya Tappamanu). It all started when Mrs. Air's son developed an allergy to cow's milk. This prompted her to research and find out the causes of the allergy. Why do people develop an allergy to cow's milk? What can be a good alternative to consuming cow's milk?

Through her research, she discovered that cow's milk allergy can be caused by a protein in cow's milk, lactose intolerance, or chemicals that are mixed in during the farming or production process. She wanted her child to drink milk that was truly chemical-free, so she could be sure what he was allergic to. She found a dairy farm that she liked, which raises cows without using any chemicals, also known as organic farming. She gave her child the milk to try, and he didn't have an allergic reaction. Therefore, she concluded that her child wasn't allergic to milk protein or lactose, but instead, he was allergic to chemicals that are mixed in during the cow's milk production process

So it became the starting point for the development of organic milk and continued development in creating and developing recipes that eventually became the Butterfly brand, which focuses on developing organic products and healthy food (Butterfly Organic). Whether it is organic cow's milk, organic yogurt, plant-based milk drinks, or yogurt products made from plant-based milk.

At present, there is a wide variety of Butterfly products being sold in leading department stores and supermarkets

The standout feature of BUTTERFLY, noticeable to consumers, is the logo of a small butterfly drawn by your 5-year-old son, Airton. This butterfly is a symbol of purity, beauty, safety, and good health, which is ready to be delivered to the hands of consumers with love and care in every bottle and cup through products under the BUTTERFLY brand

Why is ORGANIC milk from the brand BUTTERFLY different from other brands?

  • Only cows raised on a grass-fed diet are used
  • I'm a cow that eats 100% organic grass (certified organic)
  • We don't use any contraceptives or chemicals on either the cows or the farm grounds
  • We let our cows roam free in the vast fields without confinement, so that they can be healthy, happy, and in good spirits
  • The entire system has been checked, from the rearing and production processes to the final product, by experts from the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) and our internal inspection unit on a regular basis

What are the characteristics that a genuine organic farm must have in order to meet the standards?

The process of determining which farms are truly organic starts with inspecting the dairy farms. An authentic organic dairy farm must have strict rules, beginning with its location, which must be in a good environment with fresh air, surrounded by nature and have access to pure water sources. The area surrounding the farm should not have been affected by deforestation or destruction of the original ecosystem

The location must have clean soil without any chemical contaminants such as chemical fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, food additives, and genetic modification substances. The cleanliness of the soil must be free of chemicals for more than 3 years and must be checked every 6 months to 1 year by experts to ensure the suitability of the area for organic dairy farming. The soil must be fertile and have biodiversity to accommodate grass or plants that are used as cow feed. The area must also be wide enough for cows to walk around. The suitable area for cow farming is on average 3 acres per cow

The cattle that are raised must be high-quality dairy cows that are healthy and strong, with a breed that is suitable for raising in hot and humid weather conditions. They must not be sick or have any contagious diseases. The BUTTERFLY brand primarily uses three breeds of dairy cows for milk production

Holstein Friesian breed of cattle or 'black and white cows'

This is a breed that is very popular for raising. Its main advantage is that it is easy to raise and breed, and it has a high milk yield with a high protein content. The fat content in cow's milk is around 3.0 - 3.5 percent

Brown Swiss" in English. This breed is also commonly referred to as "Brown Cows

Brahman cattle (Brahman)

This is a cow that's easy to raise, able to grow in any weather conditions, with a high milk production rate and high protein content

Our mother cow is the best-selected cow that has been raised in a natural way, allowing the cow to roam freely on the organic grass farm without being confined. The food that we feed our cows is focused on providing them with organic grass and plants that we grow ourselves. The grass varieties that we select for our cows to eat must be high in protein and fiber, such as Purple Guinea Grass, Pangola Grass, Ruzi Grass, and tender elephant grass, which are rich in omega-3 acids that help stimulate the production of high-quality milk. Additionally, we also rotate the cows to different grass every 10 days to ensure they receive a complete nutrient balance

The organic farm of BUTTERFLY

At our organic dairy farm, our cows are healthy and strong, as they exercise regularly by running and playing. They enjoy a well-balanced diet and are free from any chemicals, ensuring that their food is carefully selected

The food is very well selected

Our cattle only eat 100% organic grass in the farm (Grass Fed). They do not consume processed animal feed or ingredients from other sources, as it may be contaminated with toxic substances that may come from the production or storage process

Take care of cleanliness with great care

We have chosen to adopt a natural approach instead of using chemicals, such as bathing our cows twice a day in order to keep them clean, fresh and relaxed, as well as to milk them instead of using chemical cleaners. We use herbs to keep insects away and to prevent inflammation of the udder, and we use herbal compresses to protect against mastitis

The environment is part of nature

Completely free from chemicals 100%, you can be confident that the cows are safe and definitely free from any residues

Sturdy breed of cattle

Cows are a sturdy breed, well-suited for living in open, spacious areas. They enjoy foraging for their own food and leisurely grazing on grass. They also seem to appreciate both sunny and rainy weather, but can become seriously ill when sick

Milk from the brand BUTTERFLY has received only one organic international standard (USDA) in Thailand

USDA stands for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which certifies organic foods and products in the United States according to USDA standards. For a product to be certified as truly organic by the USDA, it must possess the following characteristics
  • The ingredients must be free of any impurities of any kind. Plants must be grown with soil that does not use chemical fertilizers, animal manure, pesticides, insecticides, radiation exposure, and without genetic modification
  • For animal farms, animals must not be confined, caged, or restricted in their freedom of movement. They must be released freely and able to access food and clean water without any limitation throughout the production cycle
  • Animal food of the herb variety, for animals that require a grass-based diet such as cows, must receive nutrition from organic grass primarily, and be able to freely graze on their own. The use of antibiotics, hormone accelerants, milk accelerants, and crossbreeding of cows must be strictly prohibited. Only natural breeding methods are allowed

According to USDA standards, certification for organic produce is divided into three levels

Level 1 means that the product is considered organic with no less than 95% organic content. Any product that meets this standard will be directly certified and can display the USDA Organic label on the product to certify that it is genuinely organic

Level 2 means that the organic content is between 70% and less than 95%. Products that meet this standard will not be labeled as USDA Organic and must use the phrase "Made with Organic Ingredients" on the product

Level 3 means being organic below 70%, and only the term "some organic ingredients" will be used

Regarding Butterfly's products, whether it be organic cow's milk, stable yogurt or drinkable yogurt, they have all received the USDA's highest level 1 standard Butterfly is the first brand in Thailand and the only one in the Southeast Asian region

The process of producing organic milk

For the production process of Butterfly Organic products under the Butterfly brand, there is a selection and control process in place to ensure that the organic milk obtained meets the specified standards. Starting from preparing the area, selecting and taking care of the cows meticulously, the organic milk that is squeezed is immediately cooled to maintain its freshness before entering the pasteurization process. Prior to every pasteurization process, the quality of the milk is checked to ensure that the protein levels in the milk are at the standard level. If the milk is found to be below the standard level, the products from that round will be immediately cancelled.

Based on the production history of Butterfly organic milk, we have had to cancel two rounds of milk production. Both instances were caused by the main reason of cows drinking too much water

Event 1: It happened during a period of scorching weather, causing the cows to become excessively dehydrated. As a result, their milk production was lower than usual

Event 2: The rainy season when heavy and continuous rain falls for several days. As a result, when the cows go out to graze, they end up consuming dew-contaminated grass, which causes the milk to be diluted below the standard level

In the manufacturing section, we take special care in terms of cleanliness, both in killing germs and controlling the quality of production according to the good manufacturing standards GHPs HACCP. We also control the quality of transportation through Cold Chain Logistics and maintain the transportation temperature at no more than 6 degrees Celsius. This is done using refrigerated trucks from our company or private transportation companies that deliver directly to consumers and distribution locations with the utmost care
